Upon His Shoulder
Isaiah 9:6:
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (King James Version)
A child born, a son given, and his name will be... The mighty God? The everlasting Father? A baby born whose name will be God and Father? What might this mean? God becoming a baby? Father and Son being one? The deity of the Messiah? The Trinity? This passage is not just New Testament or Christian theology. This is from a Jewish prophet in the Old Testament. Surely Isaiah knew what the implications of calling a child God might be.
The government shall be upon his shoulder? Well, it hasn't yet, and it isn't now, so this must happen... in the future! Yes; the government will be upon his shoulder! If this doesn't happen, then the Word of God isn't true. If this doesn't happen, then the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, are false and full of lies. Oh, but rest assured, this will happen. Just because it hasn't yet doesn't mean it won't.
The Bible has two kinds of prophecies in it. Those that have happened, and those that will happen. For any given prophecy in Scripture, it either has, or it will be fulfilled. People talk about being on the right side of history. I exhort you: Be on the right side of the future!
Get right with God. Don't be left wondering what happened when the prophecies of God are fulfilled. Don't be left out. Don't be on the wrong side of eternity.
